During my Junior and Senior years in college I dedicated some of my time to Cincinnati Children's Hospital at which I volunteered to help with a support group for transgender adolescents, ages five to 22. This support group was incredibly inspiring to me. I had the privilege to meet with some of the most courageous people in Cincinnati. These adolescents, their parents, and the other volunteers have all been fighting for the equality of transgender people and their right to a happy life in this society. During this support group, we discussed a multitude of topics, including things such as how they would feel during the holidays when they must gather with family members that they haven’t seen since before their transition or with family members that weren’t as accepting of them as the people with which they meet with regularly. By spending time with these people and hearing their first-hand stories of what they have had to go through, my drive to make a difference within this society has increased. Before this group, I wanted to learn how to comfort those who are going through hard times, however now I realize that the best way to comfort is to stand by them and join their fight for equality. There are so many people who disagree with the mistreatment of minority groups and do not take a stand against it, I will not be one of those people. From this support group, I have been inspired to stand up for what I think is right in society instead of just sitting around and silently disagreeing. I have found my voice and I will never again be silent.
